🔍 A Blast from the Past: 1971 – Western Sydney’s Vision in the Making 🔍
👀 Take a look at this aerial snapshot from 1971. Follow the link to the comments to see who was the first to correctly name the divided road in the picture.
Some clues…
💡 This is the early works construction of what would soon be the F4 Western Freeway — now the M4 Western Motorway.
💡 The dual carriageway in the picture is running north-south.
💡 If you look closely, you’ll see transmission lines.
🧠 But here’s the real brain teaser: What infrastructure does it take to bring this vision to life? While roads, bridges, and tunnels are the most visible parts of a motorway project, there’s another key player that often flies under the radar:
⚡Electrical Infrastructure ⚡
It forms the backbone of every major road project, enabling everything from driver safety to smooth traffic flow.
Fast forward to today, and Ausconnex have had the privilege of contributing to some of New South Wales’ most significant upgrades in the past decade, including a few close neighbours to the area in this image.
To name a few:
🚗 The M12 Motorway – providing better connectivity to key hubs and Sydney’s international airport.
🚗 The Northern Road Upgrade – linking the new Western Sydney International Airport to the rest of the region.
🚗 The Prospect Highway Upgrade at Blacktown – enhancing one of Western Sydney’s key roadways, improving traffic flow, safety, and accessibility for all road users.
🚗 The Memorial Avenue Upgrade at Kellyville – from a two-lane road to a four lane road to meet the future transport needs of Sydney’s north west.
🚗 The Great Western Highway Upgrade at Cox’s River Road – one of Australia’s most historic roads and a key east-west connection out of Sydney, now safer and more reliable
🚗 The Jervis Bay Intersection Upgrade at Falls Creek – improve safety and reduce congestion along the Princes Highway corridor providing the main east-west link to the coastal villages of Huskisson, Vincentia, Hyams Beach and Jervis Bay.
We’ve supported Transport for NSW both directly, and as a subcontractor to Tier 1 road builders. Our , ASP1#ASP2 and #ASP3 accreditations, experience and expertise have provided design and construction of electrical early works, overhead and underground asset relocations, upgrades and new infrastructure, as well as street lighting & ITS.
Just as the construction of the M4 in the 1970s laid the foundation for modern Western Sydney, today’s projects lay the groundwork for a future that’s faster, safer, more connected, and more sustainable.
🔌 It’s amazing to think that the infrastructure we work on now is shaping the future — just as it did back in 1971.
What will the next 50 years bring?
